Violence against women in South Africa has reached epidemic proportions.

The World Bank estimates that 1 in 4 women are in an abusive relationship.

In South Africa, one woman is raped every 23 seconds. 58 children are raped every day, of whom 15% are under 11 years of age (SAIRR) and one woman is killed every 6 days by her intimate partner (Vetten 1996).
