Who is Nisaa?
The Nisaa Institute for Women's Development was
founded in 1994 by a group of committed women activists.
Nisaa is a community based, non-governmental, non-profit
organization which focuses on the abuse of women and their children (who
are secondary victims of abuse) and women's issues.
Nisaa is opposed to all forms of oppression, exploitation
and violence against women. Nisaa subscribes to the principle of non-sectarianism
and social transformation. The organization is dedicated to promoting
and acknowledging women's self and collective empowerment and their contribution
to politics, economics, social and community based activities.
Nisaa is registered with the Director of Fundraising
in Pretoria - Fundraising Number:011011270007.
Nisaa is also registered as a non-profit organisation
- Registration Number: 004-410
as well as a Section 21 Company - Registration Number: 2001/01558/08.
Mission Statement
The Nisaa Institute for Women's Development is
committed to bridging that which can bring women together as a cohesive
group and that which distinguishes each of us as individuals. It is dedicated
to promoting and acknowledging women's self and collective empowerment
and their contribution to politics, economics, and social-community based
activities.
Goal
The goal of the Institute is to establish and maintain
women-based community development programmes through a non-reactionary,
non-competitive, constructive process of democratic and participatory
engagement.
Objectives
- Encourage women to gain control and autonomy
over their lives in ways that they deem appropriate
- Provide refuge for women survivors of violence
and their children when their lives are endangered by interpersonal
violence
- Establish organizational links and mechanisms
that enable the use of community, municipal, national and international
resources for women's emancipation
- Lobby for appropriate legislation and resources
that protect and maintain the dignity of survivors of violence
- Raise awareness on violence against women
through public awareness education, media intervention and a range of
training.
